A very historic city, home of the world famous York Minster and also well known for its many chocolate factories and as the place of the execution of Highwayman Dick Turpin. York also hosts a bustling city centre with a wide variety of high street and independent shops as well as the Newgate Market. You will also be spoilt for choice when it comes to cafes and restaurants if you have worked up an appetite from visiting the many tourist attractions on offer in York. You may also wish to absorb some culture by going on one of the ghost walks or seeing a show at one of the theatres. There’s thirty world-class museums you can explore, the best racecourse in the country and a thriving cultural scene, not forgetting, York is voted the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times.
YORKSHIRE WOLDS & COASTS
The rolling landscape of the Yorkshire Wolds chalky uplands ends at the high cliffs of Flamborough Head. South from Flamborough lie the resorts of Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea with their sandy beaches and fishing traditions.
The long coastline with its seabird colonies extends to the continually shifting exposed landscape of Spurn Head at the mouth of the Humber estuary. The wide river then leads past the city of Hull and under the Humber Bridge to the port of Goole.
Inland from the Humber the coastal plains of Holderness give way to the Vale of York, with the Wolds uplands as backdrop.
You will find pretty villages and unspoilt market towns such as Beverley, Driffield, Howden, Market Weighton and Pocklington. Ancient churches include the landmark of Beverley Minster, Howden Minster and the massive Patrington church. Visitors are welcome at historic houses such as Burton Agnes, Burton Constable and Sledmere, and gardens at Burnby and Sewerby.
The flowering lanes and unspoilt villages of the Yorkshire Wolds and Howardian Hills are quiet corners of deepest rural England.
HULL
Hull also has its fair share of history though less well publicised than it deserves. Hull has plenty to offer in addition to its busy town centre and many shopping centres including a wide range of free museums, the marina and The Deep, one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world. Numerous shopping centres are within the town centre with ample car parking. Hull is the home to the longest Grade one listed structure in the country, measuring 2200 metres long and 155.5m high, the Humber Bridge. This can be crossed on foot or bicyle with your starting point at the Humber Bridge country park which is clearly signposted from the A63. If you fancy staying into the evening then the Old Town is sure to have somewhere to suit your needs.
