RAT ABBEY

THE HISTORY

The roller van was owned by East riding of Yorkshire council and travelled around local areas such as Pocklington, Market Weighton, Holme on spalding moor, Bubwith and York. Once her working life was over she was purchased by a small holder who lived at Burnby Railway station, who at first, used her to house chickens the secondly as a general storage unit. We bought her in 1995 from the disused station, in a very sorry state, for the price of £20.00. Many hours of work was needed for the painstaking restoration, including replacing the wooden axles and wheels with pneumatic tyres for more practicality and the ability to tow her on the road to shows. The restoration was complete in 2000 and since then she has covered many miles and made lots of appearances at local shows and steam rallies.
